A week to go before the 23rd edition of the Sellaronda Skimarathon kicks off, a ski-mountaineering team race held at night time, lit up by headlamps. The itinerary which is 42 kilometres long with 2700 metres of vertical height gain runs along the largest ski resort in the world, the Dolomiti Superski, and it runs along its famous ski slopes which embrace the Sella group. The Sellaronda athletes will set off from Canazei at 6 pm and will start their ascent towards Lupo Bianco to tackle the fearsome Dolomite passes, Sella, Gardena, Campolongo and Pordoi.
The starting list these last few days is being confirmed definitively, some among the best ski-mountaineers in the world will give each other battle along the Dolomite passes. Keep your eye on the racing duo: Anton Palzer from Germany and the Swiss Remi Bonnet. Palzer, Red Bull team athlete, together with the Italian Damiano Lenzi, in 2015 set the world record: 03:04’40’’. That edition’s finish was memorable with 4 athletes lined up across the finish line, Palzer-Lenzi were neck to neck with Michele Boscacci and Lorenzo Holzknecht, and only the photo finish managed to proclaim the winner. Let’s not forget that the third step of the podium was conquered by Kilian Jornet who had teamed up with Tadei Pivk.
As well as the team Palzer-Bonnet the Swiss team with Martin Anthamatten and Werner Marti will also race. |
